The Board of Trustees are an appointed body of individuals with a dedication and interest in supporting and strengthening the Sampoerna University American College. As a group, they are responsible for establishing policies that govern the programs at SUAC and provide high-level guidance and leadership to ensure that the College meets its goals and objectives.

Dr. Carpenter, Chancellor Emeritus of the Lone Star College System in Houston, served within U.S. higher education for 35 years, beginning his career in Kentucky as the youngest college president in the country, and ending as Chancellor for the Lone Star College System in Texas, a six-campus system enrolling nearly 100,000 students. He is the co-founder of Sampoerna University-American College in Indonesia.
Nationally elected by his colleagues, Dr. Carpenter served a 4-year term as a board member for the American Association of Community Colleges. During his higher education career he served on numerous boards and commissions including the Association of Community College Trustees Advisory Council, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Board, Board Chair for Community Colleges for International Development, the American Council on Education International Education Committee, The U.S. Manufacturing Institute Education Council, Greater Houston Partnership Board, Center for the Global Advancement of Community Colleges (CGACC), Center for Houston’s Future, and elected state Chair of the Texas Association of Community Colleges.
Dr. Milliron is an award-winning leader, author, speaker, and consultant, who works with universities, community colleges, K-12 schools, foundations, corporations, associations, and government agencies across the country and around the world.
He is Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer of Civitas Learning, a social-purpose corporation committed to using the best of data science and design thinking to help students learn well and finish strong on education pathways.
In previous roles, Mark served as the Deputy Director for Postsecondary Improvement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; founding Chancellor of Western Governor’s University-Texas; Endowed Fellow and Director of the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development at The University of Texas at Austin; Vice President for Education and Medical Practice with SAS; and President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College.
Milliron holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Hamilton serves as the Associate Dean for Student Success in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston. He most recently served as an Associate Dean in the Honors College and Director of the University of Houston Bonner Leaders Program.
He has been recognized at the department, college, and university levels for teaching excellence and at the national level for leadership in academic innovation. He has published widely in evolutionary theory and biological classification, as well as on effective teaching.
Before joining the University of Houston in 2012, he held appointments in the School of Life Sciences and the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University, where he was also Director of the Biology Graduate Program and an Associate Director at the International Institute for Species Exploration. Dr. Hamilton is a graduate of the University of California-San Diego, Boston College, and Berea College.
As Superintendent of the Texas-based Harmony Public Schools, Dr. Tarim oversees 36 school locations in delivering an exceptional educational experience to a diverse student body. For students in grades K-12, Superintendent Tarim strives to provide a superior academic backdrop for opportunity and success.
In recognition of Harmony Public Schools’ commitment to excellence in academics, the organization has received a number of awards and commendations. These include the National Title I Distinguished School Award as well as a nomination for the Broad Prize.
An active contributor to the field of charter school administration, Dr. Tarim has written a number of successful charter school proposals approved by the State Board of Education of Texas. He holds a Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology and Population Dynamics from Texas A&M University.
Ms. Clayton is president and CEO of Virtual Intelligence Providers, LLC or VIP-Global. Sonia founded the company in 2001 and has grown it into a multi-million dollar enterprise with global impact. Ms. Clayton immigrated to the U.S. from Venezuela with only $50 in her pocket.
Since then, she has been the recipient of 28 Awards of Excellence, including White House and State recognition. Sonia has conducted business in 60+ countries and is fluent in 4 languages. She is also the Chairman of 3 non-profit organizations and is a member of several boards to include: BYU Marriott School of Business, BYU Information Systems Board, Stanford University Entrepreneurs and Harvard University Hispanic Negotiators. In 2014, the United States Congress named Sonia the best representative of The American Dream with the title of Oracle of Hispanic Women in America. In 2015, she was named Woman of Distinction and Hispanic Woman of the Year.
In 2016, Sonia was named Best CEO - Small Business Category by the Houston Business Journal. Her firm specializes in Advanced Learning Collaboration and Organizational Change, IT / SAP (ERP) implementations, Project Management, Training & e-Learning Ecosystems and Staffing Augmentation Services. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, is a veteran of 25 years in information technology and is a Harvard Business School Certified Negotiator.
